How GLP-1 Peptides Support Weight Loss
Peptides are small proteins that help your body transmit signals and perform important functions. Some peptides, like GLP-1s, help control hunger, blood sugar, and metabolism, making them important for weight loss and overall health.
Semaglutide vs. Tirzepatide:Â What’s the Difference?
Two of the best-known GLP-1 peptides for weight loss are semaglutide and tirzepatide. Both medications support weight management, but they work slightly differently.
- Semaglutide: Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) mimics the GLP-1 peptide. It works in several ways to help improve weight management. It helps control appetite, slow digestion, and regulate blood sugar. This makes you experience less hunger and feel full longer. Many patients also experience reduced cravings while taking this peptide.
- Tirzepatide: Tirzepatide (Zepbound, Mounjaro) works on the brain’s GLP-1 and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) receptors. It works in the same way that semaglutide does and may have additional benefits: It further enhances insulin sensitivity and fat metabolism. This may lead to more weight loss.
In clinical trials, patients taking tirzepatide experienced greater weight loss than those taking semaglutide (around 20% versus around 14%.) However, in another recent trial, patients taking a higher dose of semaglutide lost just over 20% of their body weight. Both peptides have shown some impressive results!
